A brief history of hair bow style
Did you know that the history of the hair bow is said to date back to the Egyptian times! Hair bows were first used by both men and women as a practical measure to tie their hair back while working, cooking, and even fighting in battle.
In the late 1700s, large and elaborate wigs became a popular mens and womens style, often adorned with ribbons and bows. In the court of King Louis XIV in France, many types of bows could be found as the most popular wig accessory of the time. Even as late as the 1800s in America, the founding fathers (George Washington in particular) were known to fashion their curly powdered wigs with a ribbon tied into a bow, and women adopted a similar style too. Eventually the bonnet replaced the wig in popularity for ladies, but a ribbon with a bow was still used to decorate the hats.
Flash forward to more modern times today, movies, TV and pop culture in general influences most hair and fashion trends, and the bow has never really fallen out of style! With more options than ever for shapes, styles, colors, materials, the choices for bow fashion are endless. And, special clips, headbands and other fasteners make it easier than ever to choose the right bow for the right age or occasion.
